How the overall band is worked out

Your overall IELTS band is the average of the four skill bands, rounded to the nearest half band. Listening and Reading bands come from your raw score out of 40. Writing and Speaking bands come from the examiner’s marks on four criteria each. In Writing, Task 2 counts twice as much as Task 1.

Average of your four bandsOverall band
6.1256.0
6.256.5
6.56.5
6.757.0

So an average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band, and one ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band. For what the Writing and Speaking criteria mean, read our guide to how IELTS Writing and Speaking are scored.

Frequently asked questions

How is the overall IELTS band score calculated?

Add your four section bands (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking), divide by four, and round to the nearest half band. An average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band, and one ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band.

Are the Listening and Reading conversion tables the same for every test?

Not exactly. The conversion from raw score to band can shift slightly from one test version to the next, so any calculator gives an estimate. The tables here are the ones used by WriteMyEnglish for practice estimates.

Is the Reading table different for Academic and General Training?

Yes. General Training Reading needs more correct answers for the same band. Listening uses the same table for both.

Is this an official score?

No. This is a free practice calculator. Only the organisations that run the real test issue official results.
